Dr. Gebhard died March 1st, 1996 near his home while riding his bike in the foothills of Santa Barbara, which was his second greatest love after architecture. He was a good friend and a dedicated architectural historian who Santa Barbara owes a great debt for his tireless contribution and steadfast determination to preserve the unique character the city has become so well known for. Historian and professor at the University of California at Santa Barbara he was well known for his reference guides to the architecture of California, Los Angeles and San Francisco. He was the author of numerous volumes on the architects and architecture of California. He was the founder and curator of the renowned architectural drawing collection at UCSB.
