David is an internationally known artist who paints about modern life. Using humor and satire he prods and pokes this thing we call modern living, hoping to find a little insight and understanding, or at least a chuckle or two. His paintings about life in the business world have become very popular with people in business, and will be the basis for a new book about David's work due out in late 1996.
David Ross was an architect for fifteen years. He began doing art at a very early age and was encouraged to direct those talents towards something that would make a living, like architecture, not art. So he did, and built a successful career in architecture, eventually building his own firm and doing a lot of work and even winning a few awards.
But by 1989 he had had enough. Too much regulation, too many lawyers, balky banks, millions of phone calls, employees, and too much government. It wasn't fun anymore. In fact he felt it would probably kill him if given a little more time. In frustration he sought to create a new career.
Out of those frustrations came art. Art about everyday life. Humorous art about the everyday angst inherent in this thing we call modern life. Art others related to, and bought. He had a new career.
In 1991 David had his first national exposure with a sell out show in New York. He is now represented by major galleries in a number of cities around the US. Through that exposure he attracted the attention of publisher Andrews/McMeel, and they are publishing a book about David and his work in 1996. In the last few years he has had solo shows in several cities, including New York this year, Long Beach and Santa Barbara.
David's portfolio now includes originals available at a few select galleries, handmade limited edition serigraphs, and posters available through a variety of galleries and sources.
David was born in Houston, Texas in 1954. He traveled the world with his family while his father did engineering work for a large company. He graduated from California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo with a degree in Architecture. David lives part time in Santa Barbara, California, and part time in the California sierra town of Mammoth Lakes. He is a full time artist, working as hard at doing art as he did doing architecture, but happy doing it.
